I know about sleep paralysis, but had never encountered it before this event... or at least that's what I'm going to assume it was. Normally my dreams are sort of like a movie. Nightmares are infrequent and it's rare that I'm personally involved with what's happening, I'm just a passive observer watching the events.. The dream I had on this night was unusual in that I was directly involved and there was 4 scenarios. The first scenario started out like most dreams, where I watched events unfold like a movie, a guy is running from police after committing some kind of crime and another one who was innocent and dragged along, but then the setting switched. Now I was directly involved. First I was in a parkour gym setting things up, then it switched again and I was doing things in my house.

Then things got weirder because it switched again and I'm back in scenario 1. The criminal has been shot and the innocent guy is terrified as he is also about to die. Then I'm back in the gym, it's now night and there's no light aside from moonlight coming from the windows near the top of the building. I lay down to rest on the floor mat and above me is a what looks like a child with a grey face and black mouth and eyes crying a soundless scream before jumping to scenario 3 again. By this point my heart is racing and I'm absolutely terrified. I see my mother standing in the corner of the room. I approach and hear she's breathing heavily and call out to her. She turns around and her eyes are closed, asleep. She screams and lunges at me. I try to keep her off me while trying desperately to wake her up and then the scene changes again.

Now I'm in a car with a friend that I don't have a clear picture of. The car is parked on the side of the road with a forest on both sides and a steep hill behind us, the car's radio is playing in the background. We both know something is coming from the hill, but we don't know what and the dread hangs heavy. We both try to make ourselves small so we can't be seen. Just before whatever it was comes over the hill, like all the other scenarios, the scene resets. The thing is farther away again and we're both terrified. This time when the thing approaches my friend wants to try and run instead of hide. I think it's a bad idea since there's nothing to protect us outside the car. My friend doesn't care and opens the door and bolts down the road. I close the door back up and lock everything. By this time the thing is coming down the hill and I'm on the floor in the passenger seat trying to make myself as small as possible. I look up to the window I see a shadow with a wide brimmed hat and a trench coat and no other discernible features looking down at me. My heart is absolutely pounding. Whatever this thing is, it's not good. It knows where I am, but at least it cannot get to me in the car.... until I "woke up". Suddenly I'm awake in my room, but the Hat Man is still there, no longer a car between us. I can still hear the radio in the background but now louder and constantly repeating a single tone like a stuck record. I cannot move and I cannot make a sound. It raises up its arm and then does a kind of slashing motion, except it bends at the waste instead of just bringing down its arm over and over. I muster everything I can to yell "GO AWAY!", but it comes out as just a whisper. Even still the sounds stop and the Hat Man fades away leaving me alone in my room, sweating and heart pounding.

Perhaps it was nothing more than a few nightmares and sleep paralysis, but it was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced up to this point.

Every once in a while, a story comes through that I can't pull my eyes away from... This is one of those times. Very intense and nicely done (:
